Philip Guston (1913–1980) era figlio di immigrati ebrei provenienti da Odessa. Dopo essersi affermato come uno dei più eminenti rappresentanti dell’espressionismo astratto americano insieme a Mark Rothko e al suo amico d'infanzia Jackson Pollock, si avvicina alla pittura figurativa e, alla fine degli anni Sessanta, sconcerta il mondo dell'arte con i suoi dipinti fumettistici di figure incappucciate, simboli del male e del razzismo. Il suo lavoro continua a suscitare dibattiti come nel 2020 quando, alla luce dell'omicidio di George Floyd e del movimento Black Lives Matter, quattro rinomati musei hanno rinviato la sua grande retrospettiva temendo proteste di massa contro i suoi dipinti. Il film esplora il suo ritiro dal mondo dell'arte newyorkese facendoci entrare nel suo studio e nella sua casa a Woodstock accompagnati da sua figlia Musa Mayer.
Philip Guston (1913–1980) was the son of Jewish immigrants from Odessa. After having established himself as one of the most eminent representatives of American Abstract Expressionism, together with Mark Rothko and his childhood friend Jackson Pollock, he gravitated toward figurative painting and, in the late 1960s, bewildered the art world with his comic paintings depicting hooded figures, symbols of evil and everyday racism. Even today, his work provokes debates, most recently in 2020, when in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder and the Black Lives Matter movement, four renowned museums postponed his major international retrospective fearing mass protests against his paintings. The film explores his withdrawal from the New York world of art, as we are ushered into his studio and home in Woodstock accompanied by his daughter Musa Mayer.
